Our Vision for our Garden Community

Appleton Field Community Garden is a collaborative land stewardship project that cultivates a sense of place, community and ecological well-being, growing visitors' relationship to the land. Our Vision: by using regenerative agricultural practices and studying the natural world, we envision fieldwork providing a range of environmental, social, recreational, health and public educational benefits to our local community. We seek partnerships with individuals, community groups and organizations dedicated to creating an integrated and welcoming space to visit, grow and learn environmental literacy.

Utilizing Organic Regenerative Farming Methods

First came the fence that will allow the garden to grow relatively undisturbed  by wildlife. Then the meadow within the fence was mowed, a layer of cardboard, a layer of wood chips, and finally a generous layer of compost and soil was laid ready for crops to be planted. The goal will be to continue to feed and develop the soil from year to year, so that it becomes better and more fruitful with time.

Building Raised Beds

Sally Rosi Ormon led the building of raised beds and table planting beds.

Our First Crop!

Winter squash were planted at one of our early season work parties. Jon Belber put in the extra effort and the crop was a success, even though it was never watered! Just shows how well the regenerative method of building up the health of the soil works to create an extra abundant harvest.

Beyond the Garden Walls:
The Seasons of Appleton Field

Although Appleton Field and the woodlands, which surround the community garden, are not officially Friends of Appleton Community Garden's responsibility or domain, we do love the field and care deeply about the vigor and vitality of the garden's surrounding ecosystem of the field and woods.

Going Native!

There is an abundant ecosystem thriving at Appleton Field. It is important to encourage the biodiversity of native and indigenous plants, insects and animals within this ecosystem.
